A place to discuss Backup software and online services

After every scheduled backup I get a desktop notification saying 'The scheduled backup has not taken place for the past 200 days...' (the number keeps going up). But I also get an email report showing the backup did indeed happen, and all my files are showing in my IDrive account when I view it. So I am not super concerned, but the message is annoying... and why!?

If you look in Scheduler / View and manage all scheduled jobs do you see any unexpected jobs?
I've had a situation where a job from a broken (Windows) profile got left behind and IDrive continued to attempt to run it, causing errors.
Offline
No, there are no unexpected jobs. But in the email reports there are almost always a few failed files. Would any errors/failures prompt the notice that the backup didn't even take place?
Offline
If there are enough failures to always result in failed status for the job, I guess none of them will qualify as a backup.
Do you know why files are failing? Is it a permissions thing?
Offline
Well you are right, it does consider the backup as 'failed'
Below is a typical report - I assumed the excluded files were the failures? So I wasn't concerned, but if you choose to exclude, why would it be a failure?
Backup start time: 02-24-2021 00:17:19
Backup end time: 02-24-2021 06:59:21
Files considered for backup: 725433
Files already present in your account: 716345
Files backed up now: 3796 Size: 2.5 GB
Files failed to backup: 5292
Backup operation failed.
Some of the files/folders selected for backup may have been excluded from the operation. To view excluded files / folders, go to the "Exclude Files / Folders from backup" section of Settings tab in IDrive application.
Offline
The excluded files won't be the failures because they're supposed to be skipped.
Are you using the Mac version? (you seem to be accessing the forum from a Mac)
On the Windows version there is a Details tab in the log viewer that should have details of the failed files.
Also there's a file called Tracefile.txt which contains even more details about your backups. On a Windows machine its found in C:\ProgramData\IDrive\IBCOMMON\-profile-
Hopefully you'll find something similar!

Yes, on a Mac. I found the details.. and OMG, it is basically this repeated hundreds of times (for all failed files):
Start time: 04-11-2021 00:17:05
Error Info: [04-11-2021 00:31:31] [/D01501344276000801321/Applications/IDrive.app/Contents/Resources/de.lproj/DedupLocalBackup.nib/keyedobjects-110000.nib] Reason: A file name with the same directory name already exists

REALLY??

That looks like application data, similar to what you might find on Windows in c:\users\-profile-\AppData.
If you add those folders on a Windows computer you get lots of failures also.
You really should only be backing up your data. IDrive has other tools to make images or backup system state. Generally you do those infrequently so that you can rebuild after a disaster, then restore your data as the last step.

Ok, thank you for all your help. I also use Time Machine to back up the system, data, files etc., to an external drive. IDrive is just my offsite backup and I am mostly concerned with not losing client files. So since those are successfully backing up I won't worry about it. And I'll just keep ignoring those failure notifications

Or look at your backup set and make sure its only backing up your data. If the entire file system is selected for backup, that's your problem.
You probably only need the Users/ folder.
I think I'd prefer to get success messages, so that I'd know if I received a failed there really is something for me to investigate
