A place to discuss Backup software and online services

I recently had a dilemma – either sign up for a backup service, or purchase a stand alone hard drive. At first I decided to try a backup service.
I recently found legitimate, and recent reviews of IDrive's performance, which were far beyond acceptable. This is in addition to the fact that None of the 5 or 6 backups that I scheduled ever occurred. Even after multiple telephone calls to customer service for assistance. I did have One backup that succeeded (which was not scheduled) - which was a complete system backup that a customer service rep recommended we start, which took approximately 13 hours to complete - for data in the gigabytes size range. Outside of that, EVERY other scheduled backup never happened, some had error messages with unclear causes, sent via email, some did not. The scheduler in the program even went so far as to re-schedule individual backups for two weeks in advance, without any explanation? I have no idea, using their system schedule controls, how that can even be possible.
From my personal experience, the IDrive software and the company are unstable and unreliable. Perhaps it works better operating in a different OS than Windows - I have no clue. After reading many legitimate reviews, I learned that IDrive is also in no way, financially trustworthy. The tagline on IDrive's search result reads "World's most popular backup," curious as to how they came to that conclusion.
Does anyone here actually trust this company with their personal files and data?
After further consideration - I will be terminating my contract with IDrive, and have already ordered a substantial, external hard drive.
