Archive Cleanup

Anyone used this on IDrive?

As I read it, it's slightly confusing. Also support couldn't give me a definitive on cleaning up a backup before doing a restore.

I have a NAS linked into a Windows-10 as a mapped drive, it's the R: drive. IDrive on Windows backs it up nightly.
https://www.IDrive.com/help/Windows/mapped_drive_setup

The description of ARCHIVE CLEANUP > https://www.IDrive.com/help/Windows/archive_cleanup
"The Archive Cleanup feature lets you make a one to one match of the local data in the backup set to your account."

As I understand it, Archive Cleanup will run a compare against the actual file system and it's catalog of the files backed up from that system. Anything missing from the current file system will be deleted.

Questions:
1. Does IDrive prepare a list of files to be deleted from backup?
2. Does IDrive Archive Cleanup work on a a mapped drive?
3. Can you run an Archive Cleanup on a non-existent drive? (I assume it won't work as it has nothing to compare with!)

Appreciate any feedback/help...

Re: Archive Cleanup

I don't think Archive Cleanup is widely used. I consider it a dangerous feature to enable, especially in periodic mode, because data could be disappearing unnoticed.

Re: Archive Cleanup

Well something has to change.

Having lost my entire NAS which was backed up using IDrive, nearly 70,000 files, just shy of 3.8TB. It took just over 24-hours to restore from IDrive which is impressive, but not when I have a 1GB ethernet connection into the house and a 100MB to the PC.

When done, I have just over 90,000 files. It's taken more than 3-days deleting duplicate folders and files.

Because my backup is such a mess with old files and folders going back more than 5-years, I'm going to delete my entire backup and start over.

I'm not sure how I'll proceed after that. I'd really like a backup option to checkpoint. That would have allowed me to checkpoint the restore as the file system was backed up say on June 1st, any files that were not on the active file system that was backed up then, are ignored. How useless is archive cleanup in that it requires an active file system?
